Free Water

SINOPSIS

Free Water is an exploration of the intricate relationship between humanity and the commodification of natural resources, particularly the fluidity and dualities embodied by water. Within this work, water emerges as a symbol of both order and chaos, transparency and opacity, functionality and aesthetics. Drawing from my digital archive of inorganic objects found along the Geelong waterfront and its surroundings — from water vessels to signage, infrastructure to discarded remnants – Free Water offers a playful portrayal of place and perception of the contemporary time and yet extend an window to a speculative future. Through an examination of iconic landmarks such as monuments, drinking fountains, the Buckley Falls, the Eastern Beach sea baths, and industrial structures, this moving collage engages with the politics of water regulation, access, and distribution in public spaces, reflecting the temporary nature of public frameworks. The artwork encourages viewers to envision alternative narratives and possibilities, fostering a sense of curiosity and exploration about the potential evolution of our relationship with water and the urban landscape.
